At long last we have finally got some herbicidal activity on the Poa annua in 5 and 6W and the West practice green after countless unsuccessful attempts. It has certainly been a frustrating time but a worrying one as well as I really thought we had run out of options for control. When we applied this particular product several River course greens were done at the same time and had a visible effect within 5 days but the West greens took nearly 10 days. Coming into summer now we should hopefully see the plant die right out and the challenge now will be to stop germination from the large seed bank that will be in the green surface.
We have started preparing a temporary green on 9R in readiness for an attempt to spray out the encroaching couch grass and replant with 328. It will be a similar process to what we started at 1R but for some reason had difficulty in getting a strike there and had a lot of regrowth. The hope is that we can rid the green of the encroachment and not have to remove the surface or replace the soil profile. The plan is to start spraying the encroachment areas in early November and after three or four applications do the planting in early December. When we did 1R the herbicide was applied in September when the encroaching grass wasn't really growing vigorously so it is expected that by spraying in November the grass will be fully active and take the chemical in much better resulting in a more effective application.
